About The Sermons

This section contains the sermons preached and lessons taught to our congregation by our brothers in the Lord, John Phillis and Harvey Porter. Occasionally, there will be sermons and lessons from the Bible presented by other ministers of the Gospel.

Before his death in March of 1998, Harvey Porter had been a minister of the Gospel of Christ for more than 40 years. He had a doctorate degree in Biblical Archeology, and many of his sermons and lessons are flavored with the richness of his knowledge of the Bible lands and its people. He was highly sought after to present his Biblical Archeology slide series around the world. He and his wife, Sue, often traveled to the Bible lands to gain new knowledge, refresh his library of slides and lead fellow Christians on tours. We will continue to add transcripts of Harvey’s sermons to this site as long as possible, Lord willing. We acknowledge with much thanks the permission of Harvey’s wife, Sue Porter, to transcribe his tapes so that you might reap the benefits of the teachings of this humble and true servant of God.

John Phillis, during his many years of service to his country in the U. S. Army, developed his teaching and preaching skills with total dedication to sound doctrinal teaching. After his retirement, he gave full time to sharing ministerial responsibilities with Harvey Porter, preaching and teaching the Gospel with much skill and with a total willingness to grow in knowledge and wisdom, continuing to learn from Harvey Porter’s expertise. You will gain a deeper love for the Scriptures and a greater appreciation of God’s love for us as you study the sermons and lessons presented by John Phillis, a man of God.

After Harvey’s death, John assumed total responsibility as the minister for our congregation. These two men, as a team, presented the Word of God to the Northeast church of Christ in all of its richness and beauty. You will see that many times, you will be taken back to the original Greek language for meanings of words so that you gain an understanding of the Scriptures in depth. You will notice the abundant use of Scripture. You will, we feel, enjoy a feast of sound doctrine—Truth presented as if they were speaking the very Words of God, 1 Peter 4:11.

Each sermons is arranged by subject. We anticipate that the number of sermons added to this site will grow, so keep coming back. You don’t want to miss these wonderful, Scripturally sound sermons and lessons from God’s Word.

About the Bible Readings

Our brother in the Lord, Harvey Porter, with the help of others, developed a Weekly Bible Reading Guide for Two Years. There are 96 weekly readings, allowing one week per quarter for “catch up.” In each of the two years, you will read half of the Old Testament, Genesis through 2 Chronicles the first year and Ezra through Malachi in the second year. Also, each year you will read the book of Psalm twice, the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) four times, the book of Acts four times, and the remainder of the New Testament twice.

As you read from God’s Word each week, you will be studying from the Old Testament Books of the Law, historical background, wisdom literature and the prophetic messages from this former covenant of God with Israel. Each week, the readings from the book of Psalm will give you poetic devotional material. The weekly readings from the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) will keep you in constant contact with the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The readings each week from the rest of the New Testament will give you the details of the establishment of Christ’s church and its instructions for direction in Christian living.

It is impossible to read the Word of God too much. IF all Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for us, IF we are to be God’s workmen who correctly handle the Word of Truth, IF we are to examine the Scriptures daily to know Truth from false teaching and IF we are to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, then we MUST make the reading of God’s Word a main part of our daily lives. We pray that this two-year Bible Reading Guide will encourage you to do just that.
