c. What must we "put on"?
Answer: We must put on the new self, created to be like
God in true righteousness and holiness, (verse 24), a result of
being made new in the attitude of our minds, (verse 23).
MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
What is the
new self? It is the opposite of that old self, that worn out
self being corrupted by its deceitful desires. The new self
is not just new in time, but applies to the QUALITY of the self,
once worn out by sin, and now made new by the entrance of Christ
into that worn out, useless and corrupted life. It is a holy
life, which is the result of accepting reconciliation to God, by
faith in and obedience to Christ Jesus:
Romans 6:3-4: "Or don't you know
that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from
the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new
life."
What are
some of the things we must put on, clothe ourselves with, add to
the new self? What makes up the new self?
Romans 13:12-14: "The night is
nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds
of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave
decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in
sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and
jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus
Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the
sinful nature[or, "the flesh"]."
Ephesians 6:10-18: "Finally, be
strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full
armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's
schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of
this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so
that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your
ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand
firm then, with the belt of Truth buckled around your waist, with
the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet
fitted with the readiness that comes from the Gospel of
peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,
with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil
one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the Word of God. And pray in the Spirit on
all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in
mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the
saints."
Colossians 3:12-14: "Therefore, as
God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear
with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have
against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And
over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together
in perfect unity."
2 Peter 1:3-9: "His divine power
has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our
knowledge of Him Who called us by His Own glory and goodness.
Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises,
so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and
escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith
goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge,
self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to
perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and
to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these
qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being
ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted
and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his
past sins."
This new
self is created to be like God in true righteousness and
holiness:
Romans 8:29: "For those God
foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His
Son, that He might be the firstborn among many
brothers."
Ephesians 2:10: "For we are God's
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God
prepared in advance for us to do."
1 Peter 1:13-16: "Therefore,
prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope
fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is
revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil
desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He
Who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is
written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"
