Part IV--The Family Of God / The Body Of Christ

B. Lesson 20--The Name of Christ's Body

    21. READ: 1 CORINTHIANS 10:31-33 AND 1 CORINTHIANS 11:1

      d. Whose example should we follow?

Answer: As Paul's example shows us, we should follow the example of Christ, (1 Corinthians 11:1).

MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

There is order and unity in Paul's statement:

        1. Christ is the supreme example:

John 13:15: [Jesus said,] "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."

1 Peter 2:21: "To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps."

        2. Christ's apostle follows His example ("as I follow the example of Christ.").

        3. We are to follow the apostle's example ("Follow my example...").

        4. We are to be examples to believers and unbelievers:

Matthew 5:14-16: [Jesus said,] "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."

2 Corinthians 2:14-16: "But thanks be to God, Who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?"

1 Timothy 4:12: "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity."

Titus 2:7-8: "In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us."

1 Peter 2:11-12: "Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us."
