Part IV--The Family Of God / The Body Of Christ

D. Lesson 22--The Mission of Christ's Body

    14. READ: ROMANS 1:1-17

      a. How was Jesus declared with power to be God's Son?

Answer: Jesus was declared with power to be God's Son by His resurrection from the dead, (verse 4).

MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
        • From The Book of Romans by Jim McGuiggan:

And what pointed Him out to be God's son? What demonstrated His Own Godhood and divinity? The "resurrection of the dead." It isn't the resurrection "from" the dead (which is usual) but the resurrection "of" the dead. It would seem here that Paul is including the resurrection of all in the resurrection of our Lord (see 1 Corinthians 15:20ff).

The resurrection tells us that God has accepted the work of Christ on the cross on sinful man's behalf. It tells us that in the end right prevails over evil. It tells us of the full defeat of all hellish powers whether they are visible governments or invisible powers. It tells us of the glorious hope extended to all men and women of everlasting life and fellowship with God. In this passage it points out the Godhood of Jesus Christ.

        • Jesus claimed to be God's Son. His Own prophecy was that He would rise on the third day. And so He WAS declared or "designated" to be God's Son, being resurrected by God on the third day after His death. (NOTE: "Declared" is from the Greek word horisthentos, which comes from horos, meaning "boundary." So it means "marked off by boundaries." In the metaphorical sense, as here, it means "designated." Ralph Earle (Word Meanings in the New Testament) states: "Jesus did not become the Son of God by His resurrection. He was God's Son from all eternity. But His resurrection designated Him as such to mankind. James Denney has well expressed it in these words: 'The resurrection only declared Him to be what He truly was....'"

        • Luke 18:31-33: "Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, 'We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock Him, insult Him, spit on Him, flog Him and kill Him. On the third day He will rise again.'"

Acts 3:15: "You killed the Author of life, but God raised Him from the dead. We are witnesses of this."

Acts 5:30-31: "The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead--Whom you had killed by hanging Him on a tree. God exalted Him to His Own right hand as Prince and Savior that He might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel."

Acts 10:39-40: "We are witnesses of everything He [Jesus] did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed Him by hanging Him on a tree, but God raised Him from the dead on the third day and caused Him to be seen."

Acts 13:26-38: "Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have Him executed. When they had carried out all that was written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead, and for many days He was seen by those who had traveled with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now His witnesses to our people. We tell you the Good News: What God promised our fathers He has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: 'You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.' The fact that God raised Him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: 'I will give You the holy and sure blessings promised to David.' So it is stated elsewhere: 'You will not let Your Holy One see decay.' For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. But the One Whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through Him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses."

Romans 4:23-25: "The words 'it was credited to him' were written not for him [Abraham] alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in Him Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification."

Romans 8:34: "...Christ Jesus, Who died--more than that, Who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us."

1 Corinthians 6:14: "By His power God raised the Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also."

1 Corinthians 15:15-20: "More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead. But He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep."

Colossians 2:9-12: "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, Who is the head over every power and authority. In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, having been buried with Him in baptism and raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, Who raised Him from the dead."

1 Peter 1:20-21: "He [Christ] was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through Him you believe in God, Who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God."
