Answer: If we disown Jesus, He will also disown us,
(verse 12).
MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
"Disown" comes from the Greek word
arneomai, which means "to say...not, to
contradict." Here, it is to deny by way of disowning a
person, i.e., to deny that a person is a follower of Christ
Jesus. If we do so by word or deed (or lack thereof), then
Jesus will Himself disown us and deny us eternal life, for we have
proved faithless:
Psalm 103:3: [God said,] "I will
set before My eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men
I hate; they will not cling to Me."
Psalm 119:58: "I look on the
faithless with loathing, for they do not obey Your
Word."
Proverbs 14:14: "The faithless will
be fully repaid for their ways, and the good man rewarded for
his."
Matthew 7:21-27: [Jesus said,]
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will
enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the Will of My
Father Who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day,
'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your Name, and in Your
Name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will
tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from Me, you
evildoers!' Therefore everyone who hears these Words of
Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his
house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and
the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall,
because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who
hears these Words of Mine and does not put them into practice is
like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came
down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that
house, and it fell with a great crash."
Matthew 10:32-33: [Jesus said,]
"Whoever acknowledges Me before men, I will also acknowledge
him before My Father in heaven. But whoever disowns Me before
men, I will disown him before My Father in heaven."
Matthew 26:34-35: "'I tell
you the Truth,' Jesus answered, 'this very night,
before the rooster crows, you [Peter] will disown Me three
times.' But Peter declared, 'Even if I have to
die with You, I will never disown You.' And all the other
disciples said the same."
Matthew 26:75: "Then Peter
remembered the Word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster
crows, you will disown Me three times.' And he went outside
and wept bitterly."
Luke 12:8-9: [Jesus said,] "I tell
you, whoever acknowledges Me before men, the Son of Man will also
acknowledge him before the angels of God. But he who disowns
Me before men will be disowned before the angels of
God."
Titus 1:15-16: "To the pure, all
things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe,
nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are
corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they
deny Him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing
anything good."
1 John 2:22-23: "Who is the liar?
It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is
the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son. No one
who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has
the Father also."
Jude 1:3-4: "Dear friends, although
I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I
felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was
once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose
condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in
among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God
into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only
Sovereign and Lord."
Revelation 3:8: [Jesus said to the church
in Philadelphia, ] "I know your deeds. See, I have placed
before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have
little strength, yet you have kept My Word and have not denied My
Name."
