Part IV--The Family Of God / The Body Of Christ

D. Lesson 22--The Mission of Christ's Body

    4. READ: MATTHEW 28:16-20

      c. What did Jesus promise them?

Answer: Jesus promised His disciples that surely He was with them always, to the very end of the age, (verse 20).

MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

Christ has promised His continual presence with us. The Greek for "always" literally means "all the days" (pasas tas hemeras). This is His continual presence day in and day out, no matter what troubles or difficulties may come.

The promise continues "to the very end of the age." The KJV translates this "unto the end of the world," but it should be translated "end of the age" (aionos). Only the Father knows when this will be:

Matthew 24:35-36: [Jesus said,] "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away. No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Jesus is the risen, all-powerful Redeemer, Who is with His people all of the time. The way Jesus speaks here is called "the prophetic present" in the original Greek. It means that He is with us all the days until He comes in glory, no matter how much time passes before He comes again.

With these reassuring and empowering Words of Jesus, we who are His may be assured that He Who came to earth to be "God with us" (Immanuel--Matthew 1:23) will REMAIN with us always!

        Scriptures to consider:

        • "And surely I am with you...":

Deuteronomy 31:6, 8: [Moses said,] "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you...The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

Joshua 1:5: [God, speaking to Joshua,] "No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you."

1 Kings 8:57: "May the Lord our God be with us as He was with our fathers; may He never leave us nor forsake us."

Haggai 1:13: "Then Haggai, the Lord's messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: 'I am with you,' declares the Lord."

Matthew 18:20: [Jesus said,] "For where two or three come together in My Name, there am I with them."

Read all of John, Chapter 17.

Acts 18:9-11: "One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: 'Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city [Corinth].' So Paul stayed for a year and a half, teaching them the Word of God."

Hebrews 13:5-8: "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.' So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my Helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?' Remember your leaders, who spoke the Word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

        • "always, to the very end of the age":

Psalm 48:14: "For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end."

Daniel 2:44: "In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever."

Daniel 6:26: "For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end."

Matthew 10:22: [Jesus said,] "All men will hate you because of Me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved."

Matthew 13:37-43: "He [Jesus] answered, 'The One Who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will weed out of His kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.'"

Matthew 13:47-50: [Jesus said,] "Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Matthew 24:3: "As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. 'Tell us,' they said, 'when will this happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?'"

Matthew 24:12-14: [Jesus said,] "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this Gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."

Philippians 3:20-21: "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body."

1 Corinthians 1:7-9: "Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God, Who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful."

1 Corinthians 15:20-26: "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when He comes, those who belong to Him. Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death."

Hebrews 3:14: "We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first."

Hebrews 9:26-28: "Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him."

1 Peter 4:7: "The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray."

2 Peter 3:10-13: "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness."
