Part I--The Character Of Jesus Christ Our Lord

A. Lesson 1--Jesus Is The Son Of The Almighty God

    2. READ: JOHN 1:1-2 AND JOHN 1:14-18

      a. Who is the Word?

Answer: Jesus Christ is the Word. He was God and was with God in the beginning, (verses 1 and 2).

MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
      • Concerning "the Word," Greeks used this term not only of the spoken word but also of the unspoken word, the word still in the mind--the reason. When they applied it to the universe, they meant the rational principle that governs all things.

Jews, on the other hand, used "Word" as a way of referring to God.

Thus John used a term that was meaningful to both Jews and Gentiles.

That the Word was with God shows that He was distinct from the Father.

That the Word was God shows that Jesus was God in the fullest sense.

That the Word became flesh shows that Jesus, being God but distinct from the Father, was truly "Immanuel"--God with us. Romans 9:5 says, "Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, Who is God over all, forever praised! Amen."

      • Isaiah 55:10-11 says of the Word:

"As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is My Word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

      • Jesus said of Himself as the Word:

"As for the person who hears My Words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not accept My Words; that very Word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. For I did not speak of My Own accord, but the Father Who sent Me commanded Me what to say and how to say it. I know that His command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told Me to say," John 12:47-50.

And in John 14:14, Jesus continues this thought:

"Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teaching. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me will not obey My teaching. These Words you hear are not My Own; they belong to the Father Who sent Me.'"

      • Jesus is still, and always will be, THE WORD:

Revelation 19:13 says of Jesus, the Word: "He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His Name is the Word of God."
