Part I--The Character Of Jesus Christ Our Lord

D. Lesson 4--Jesus Is The Teacher Of The Nations

    10. READ: MATTHEW 28:16-20

      b. What does Jesus want everyone to learn to do?

Answer: Jesus wants every person in every nation to be taught about Him through the Word of God. Jesus wants those who are already His disciples, or followers, to go and teach all people in all nations, baptize those who believe in Him in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and then continue to teach them to obey everything He has commanded, (verses 19 and 20).

MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

Concerning the commands to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them... and teaching them...":

Isaiah 49:6: "He says: ‘It is too small a thing for you to be My servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring My salvation to the ends of the earth.'" (Read Acts 9:1-31 for the fulfillment of this prophecy in the person of Saul of Tarsus--later to be named Paul. And see Acts 13:46-48 below.)

Mark 16:15-16: "He [Jesus] said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the Good News to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.'"

Luke 24:47: [Jesus said,] "and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in His Name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."

John 14:26: "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My Name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

Acts 1:8: [Jesus, speaking to the apostles, said,] "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Acts 2:38: "Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the Name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'"

Acts 2:42: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

Acts 13:46-48: "Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: ‘We had to speak the Word of God to you first [the Jews]. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the Word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed."

Acts 14:21-22: "They [Paul and Barnabas] preached the Good News in that city [Derbe] and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. ‘We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,' they said."

Romans 6:3-4: "Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

Galatians 3:27: "for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ."

Colossians 2:12: "having been buried with Him in baptism and raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, Who raised Him from the dead."
