Part I--The Character Of Jesus Christ Our Lord

D. Lesson 4--Jesus Is The Teacher Of The Nations

    3. READ: MATTHEW 6:24

      a. What did Jesus teach about serving God?

Answer: Jesus teaches us that serving God is a CHOICE that we must make. We cannot serve both God and money, or riches. We cannot love both God and riches. We cannot be completely devoted to both God and riches. If we CHOOSE to let riches be our master, then we show that we hate and despise God. If we CHOOSE GOD to be our Master completely, then the riches of this world become meaningless to us, (verse 24).

MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
      • SERVING RICHES:

Proverbs 11:28: "Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf."

Proverbs 30:8-9: "Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You and say, ‘Who is the Lord?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the Name of my God."

Isaiah 10:3: "What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?"

Jeremiah 9:23-24: "This is what the Lord says: ‘Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, Who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the Lord."

Luke 8:14-15: [Jesus said,] "The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the Word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop."

1 Timothy 6:9: "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."

      • TRUE RICHES:

Proverbs 22:1: "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold."

Ephesians 1:7-8: "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding."

Philippians 4:19: "And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

Colossians 2:2-3: "My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."
