Forgiveness here means to cover over--to atone.
First, the just punishment due to us for our sinful conduct is "remitted." We are released from the punishment we deserve. The punishment God's justice REQUIRES for our sins is dismissed, and we are delivered from that righteous and just penalty.
Second, God's forgiveness completely removes from us the sins that offend Him. The Lord will NEVER count these sins against us. Our sins are remembered no more by Him once the act of forgiveness has been gifted to us by God's grace--His loving kindness toward us as shown in the offering of His Only Son, Jesus.
WE did not do the atoning for our sins. JESUS did the atoning for our sins by the shedding of His innocent blood on the cross. THROUGH that blood, we are made clean--forgiven. JESUS paid the price--atoned--for the sins WE commit. God accepts that offered price for us when we believe in and OBEY His Son. THEN forgiveness is ours--TOTALLY!!
Psalm 32:1-2: "Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit."
Psalm 103:12: "as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."
Jeremiah 31:34 and Hebrews 8:11-12: [God said,] "‘No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, "Know the Lord," because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest,' declares the Lord. ‘For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.'"
2 Corinthians 5:18-19: "All this is from God, Who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation."
Read all of Hebrews 10.
1 Peter 1:22-23: "Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the Truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring Word of God."
