It would be sheer folly to assume that the true believer in Jesus Christ can receive eternal salvation without obedience. The SOURCE of eternal salvation learned OBEDIENCE from what He suffered. He was made perfect through this suffering. He OBEYED His Father! All that God desired of Him, He completed. How, then, could we assume that God would require any less from those who claim to believe on the Son--who claim to follow Him? If the Son of God Himself humbled Himself and was obedient to His Father--even to the point of dying on the cross, the One Who knew no sin for those who were sin--then those who become believers through a knowledge of the Truth--God's Word, Which is Christ (John 1:1-4)--MUST follow the example He left for us. We must be obedient to God's commands! God has testified about His Son that we might believe on Him. God has given His commands for salvation and living a holy life through His Son that we might be obedient to Him. Anyone who claims to be a believer and does not obey the commands of God is making God out to be a liar. This person refutes the testimony God has given about and through His Son. Faith and obedience cannot be separated in the true child of God. James 2:18-19 says, "But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is One God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder."
Matthew 7:21-22: [Jesus said,] "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the Will of My Father Who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your Name, and in Your Name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!'"
Matthew 12:50: [Jesus said,] "For whoever does the Will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."
John 12:26: [Jesus said,] "Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves Me."
John 12:49-50: [Jesus said,] "For I did not speak of My Own accord, but the Father Who sent Me commanded Me what to say and how to say it. I know that His command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told Me to say."
John 14:10: [Jesus said,] "Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in Me? The Words I say to you are not just My Own. Rather, it is the Father, living in Me, Who is doing His work."
John 14:15 and 19-21: [Jesus said,] "If you love Me, you will obey what I command. Before long, the world will not see Me anymore, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you. Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me. He who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and show Myself to him."
John 14:23-24: "Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teaching. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me will not obey My teaching. These Words you hear are not My Own; they belong to the Father Who sent Me.'"
John 14:31: [Jesus said,] "I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on Me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what My Father has commanded Me."
John 15:9-10: [Jesus said,] "As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love. If you obey My commands, you will remain in My love, just as I have obeyed My Father's commands and remain in His love."
Romans 1:5-6: "Through Him and for His Name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ."
1 Peter 1:2: "who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood..."
1 John 1:5-13: "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out His commands. This is love for God: to obey His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. This is the One Who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit Who testifies, because the Spirit is the Truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which He has given about His Son. Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about His Son. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."
2 John 1:6: "And this is love: that we walk in obedience to His commands. As you have heard from the beginning, His command is that you walk in love."
