PART III--The Way Of Serving God In Christ Jesus

A. Lesson 13--We Serve By Worshipping

    6. READ: 1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26 AND 1 CORINTHIANS 10:14-17

      a. What does the bread represent?

Answer: Jesus established that during our worship of God in the partaking of the Lord's Supper, the bread represents His body, and we who break the bread and eat of it participate in the body of Christ, being now the body of Christ and being one with Him, (1 Corinthians 11:23-24 and 1 Corinthians 10:16-17).

MORE INFORMATION AND/OR OTHER SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

The true bread of heaven is Jesus Christ--life through Him. Without His pure sacrifice, there would be no life for us. This sacrifice must always be in the forefront of our thoughts and actions because we base our whole life in Christ upon our faith that He is the Son of God, that He became flesh, lived among us, and died so that we might have life through Him. The bread we partake of each Lord's Day represents the One Body sacrificed for us. The One Body that is the Lord's church participates in the One Body of Christ--a unity in God and Christ and the Spirit. Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper so that we would constantly be reminded of the reason we now have life--life through Him--and so that we would constantly be reminded of the supreme price paid by Jesus so that we might take hold of life eternal:

John 6:32-33: "Jesus said to them, ‘I tell you the Truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father Who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He Who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.'"

John 6:35: "Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty.'"

John 6:47-51: [Jesus said,] "I tell you the Truth, he who believes has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."
