9. READ: EPHESIANS 5:21-33
a. Christ is the head and Savior of what?
Answer: Christ is the head and Savior of the church, which is His body, (verse 23).
Every human body has a head, which is in control of the functions of the body, physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, etc. The head (mind) of a body has authority over that body.
In the same way, Christ has authority over each member of His body, the church. Each member is to respond to the authority of Christ, working in harmony together.
Christ, as our Savior, offered His physical body as a perfect sacrifice to save the spiritual body, which is His church. We, each a member of the body that makes up His church, are His fullness--He is full of the church, His body--we are IN Him. The church is the complement of Christ.
"Complement" means "a quantity needed to make a thing complete; full quantity, number, or amount; to fill out."
And each member of Christ's body is filled in every way by Him, striving to conform to the head of the body--Christ. Thus, the perfection, which is Christ, is in authority over--the head of--His church, and they are members of His body who are filled with Him. Christ, Who is the perfect Lamb of God, is the head of His perfect body, His church.
Ephesians 1:22-23: "And God placed all things under His [Jesus'] feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him Who fills everything in every way."
