There was a
fellow by the name of Kenneth McFarland who was voted Number One
Speaker in America by the Chambers of Commerce—an outstanding
speaker in Topeka, Kansas. On one occasion, he said his dad
died and left four boys for his mother to raise. And he said,
at times she would ask them to do something and they would say
“Why?” and she’d take the time and tell
them. But then there were other times when they’d ask
“Why?” and she would say, “Now, son, the Lord put
me here to be your mother and He expects me to do the best job I
know how and this is the best job I know how, and you’ll do
it!” He said that, without any explanation, “We
did it!”
Well, God
doesn’t have to explain why He’s asking us to do
it! It’s none of our business why He asked us to do
it! If He just said to do it—do it!
That’s the real test of faith. You see, “We
walk by faith, not by sight,” 2 Corinthians
5:7. Faith has to do with what is “not
seen,” [Hebrews 11:1].
The Lord
doesn’t operate like He did back in the days of Gideon when
dew was put on that fleece, or there was dew everywhere else and
not on the fleece [see Judges, chapter 6:33-40]. No,
there’s nothing visible. When a man is baptized, do you
see anything that has visibly changed? Do you see Heaven
open? Do you see the Book of Life up there? Do you see
the writing of that name in the Book of Life? No, you
don’t see any of that! Well how do you know? How
do you know that when a man is baptized into Christ that his name
is written in the Book of Life? How do you know that?
The only way you know it is because God said it!
That’s all! There’s no visible evidence;
it’s just His Word. It’s not always easy just to
take that Word!
You see, that
Word has always been powerful, whether it be written or
spoken. It was that Word that put the stars out there in the
sky. It was that Word that brought the planets to be.
God just spoke and things came into existence, according to
Hebrews 11, verse 3 and following. And it is by that
same Word that these planets don’t collide in outer
space. Why? Because God just told them not to!
Even though the other night you saw five planets in a row (which
won’t happen again for what?—another 200 years!), those
planets will stay where God told them to stay! In Job
38:8-11, God said to the ocean “hither to shalt thou
come, but no further.” Somebody described
God’s command to the ocean as being a babe in a crib, and God
said to the babe, “You stay in that crib—don’t
get out!”So there are a few times the babe
slobbers a little bit, but what keeps those oceans from coming out
of their cribs? It’s because God said, “You
stay there!” You know, through all the ages, the
coming and going of the tides, their regularity, it doesn’t
matter how much rain falls—maybe we’ve had rain all
over the nation—you never hear someone say, “Oh boy,
that old Atlantic is really overflowing today!”
No! “The Pacific is really up today!”
No! Or in times of great drought, when it hasn’t
rained—you understand that don’t you?—you know a
little bit about drought! [New Mexico was in a time of drought at
the time of this sermon]—you never hear someone say,
“Look at the ocean!” Now, the Rio Grande might be
down a little, but not the ocean! You see? Well, who
operates it? God does! He said to do it—He said
“You do this…,” and it does! He
tells gravity, “You pull down!” and it
obeys!
Well,
isn’t His written Word just as powerful as His spoken
Word? If He said something, then you recognize that what He
said is, indeed, powerful! There isn’t anything more
powerful than the Word of God. The Bible says it [God’s
Word—“the Gospel of Christ”] has the power
to save us, Romans 1:16. So let’s recognize
that!
So if the Lord,
then, lets us know there is one baptism, and
He gives us all of the evidence that we need as to which
one baptism that one baptism is, then
we come to the conclusion that any other than that one must
be wrong! Someone might say, “Well, I don’t
understand why we can’t sprinkle water instead of
immersing.” Well, because God said to do it this way
[immersion]! Or, “Why can’t we pour
water?” Well, because God said to it this way
[immersion]! Why…? I’m not going to ask
because I don’t even know why. God just said to do
it! Our real test is: Do we really believe
it? Will we accept it? Or, will we try to explain it
away?
So, when God
speaks, even though we might not know why He’s doing
it or why He arranged it that way, that really ought
to be sufficient! We ought to be willing and ready to accept
it and not try to change it in any sense. We have no right to
change it! God’s Word is right! He
“cannot lie,” Titus 1:2.
“It is impossible for God to lie,” Hebrews
6:17 and 18. “Let God be true, but every man a
liar,” Romans 3:4. The Bible said,
“Hath He said, and shall He not do it? Or hath He spoken,
and shall He not make it good?” Numbers
23:19. So, when God speaks, that ought to settle the
matter!
If we really
want to go to Heaven when we die—if we really mean
business—if we really are honest—we’re not
trying to do what the whole world has done! With only two
exceptions in the history of the human race—we’ve
mentioned this, but we need to stress it again because people
don’t seem to remember it—God’s people, with only
two exceptions, have never been in the majority, from Adam until
now! Before sin came, Adam and Eve, God’s people, were
in the majority! When the flood came, there was nobody left
except Noah and his family. God’s people were in the
majority! But with those two exceptions, we—God’s
people—have always been in the minority! Now,
that means that most people—through all these
ages—have been wrong! Most people are not
right! So there’s no comfort in following the
multitudes. Exodus 23:2 says, don’t
“follow a multitude to do evil.”
Aren’t we told that many more will be lost than will be
saved, Matthew 7:13 and 14?
